Ah, I see more clearly what you're getting at. Unfortunately, we don't have a tool like that. I can see how this could be helpful. Right now I remind our main committee at the beginning of each selection meeting about our approach to awarding scholarships (honoring donor intent, the differences between a criteria…

Here's a copy of our one-size-fits-all application. I hope it helps!

Got it! Okay, ultimately, our strategy is to encourage any "overage" to be used for future tuition/fees/etc. If that's not an option, or if that will compound the problem, then releasing the funds directly to the student is acceptable. (We make a point to let the students know that this money will have tax liabilities.)…

Tough situation. Can I ask a point of clarification? Can you explain "permission to withdraw" a little more? What are they withdrawing from? An account at your foundation or an account with their school?

Good question! Obviously, a scoring rubric is somewhat dependent on what questions are being asked in the application. That being said, I'm attaching a copy of our scoring rubric. Perhaps this might help!

Jessica, There's a lot to unpack in these questions, and I know that I don't have most of the answers. However, in order to help move the conversation forward (and to practice being vulnerable) I'm attaching copies of one of our general applications and follow-up forms. Perhaps these might help you? Maybe others can…

Good question. I would love to see examples of DEI compliance questions. I remember seeing samples of anti-discrimination statements a few years ago -- maybe these might help too???

The primary reason to eliminate the LOI was that I was trying to reduce the burden on the applicants. An LOI added another step, a longer process, an additional deadline and emails to respond to. By simplifying the application, we felt it would be less of a burden on the applicants, even those that didn't get funding.

@robincowles We don't have this feature, but I'm intrigued. Can you describe what you think an anti-bias statement might say? Alternatively, have you considered blind evaluation? I'm seriously thinking about implementing it for next year's UA process.

I always encourage simplifying things, so skip the LOI. The clearer you can be on what you fund up front, the less a need you'll have for LOIs. While I haven't used this resource before, many suggest "Project Streamline" to help with this (see link below). For one of our grant processes, we used to use an LOI, but we got…
