Component Fund Fundraising Events

How does everyone manage Component Funds, specifically those that do not have their own 501(c)(3) status and are advised by donor-advised fund (DAF) advisors who are part of the general public, that want to hold fundraising events (i.e. gala, golf outing)? More specifically, how do you oversee their activities? What parameters or restrictions have you implemented in your fundraising policy that have been effective for you? Additionally, how have you navigated the gray areas related to raffles and auctions?

Hi Rosie -
Thank you for reaching out, these are great questions! If I'm understanding you correctly, we here at Foundant typically see this sort of arrangement referred to as 'Donor Initiated Fundraising.' Every organization usually has their own interpretation or policy regarding the practice, and they can vary significantly. We can't advise you specifically, but a google search using the term Donor Initiated Fundraising will likely yield some relevant resources and may be a good starting point. I believe the Council on Foundations also has some material addressing these types of activities.
I look forward to hearing input about how our other Community Foundation clients are handling management and oversight of these events!

@MariannePlath I appreciate your patience with my wording! What I meant to say is that I’m really interested in Donor Initiated Fundraising. Our organization already has a Fundraising Policy in place, but as I’m just starting out in this role, I'm curious about how others are approaching it. It can be a bit tricky, especially with all the details involved in raffles and auctions that these fundraising groups are putting together. I’d love to hear any tips or experiences you might have to share!
